The People of the Play

Many of the people in the play are based on real people. The Kuhns & Church edition (175-177) describes them:

  • Roxane (Madeleine Robineau) married Christophe de Champagne, Baron of Neuvillette. In 1640, when her husband was killed at the seige of Arras, Madeleine retired to the Convent of the Filles de la Croix, where she lived until her death in 1657. Her biography by Father Cyprien, Recueil des vertus et des ecrites de la Baronne de Veuvillette, was published in Paris, 1668.
  • Henri Le Bret, the growler, was a life-long friend of Cyrano, having met him when he was 13. He became Cyrano's biographer and edited an edition of his work posthumously.
  • Antoine, Comte de Guiche, afterwards the Duc de Grammont was wounded at the defense of Mantua in 1630. He married the niece of Richelieu. He served with distinction in Germany, Flanders, and Alsace, and at the siege of Arras, Bapaume, and La Bassee he gained many honors. "He was said to be one of the most amiable men of the court of Louis XIV." (175)
  • Montfleury was a famous actor in Moliere's day. He was enormously fat and loved to play kings. He performed with many of the other actors in the first act at the Hotel de Bourgogne.
  • Cuigy and Brissailles were said by Le Bret to be friends of Cyrano's.
  • Ligniere was a writer of epigrams, mentioned by Boileau in his Ninth Satire.
  • Carbon de Castel-Jaloux was indeed captain of Cyrano's guards.
  • Mere Marguerite, who is said by Le Bret to have "particularly esteemed" Cyrano, founded a convent of the order of St. Domic, under the name of Filles de la Croix, in Rue de la Charonne, Faubourg St. Antoine. This was the convent Madeleine retired to after her husband's death.
