The West Windows
in the Old Choir Loft
of St. Bernardine Church

These windows are located in the old choir loft behind the crucifix and the grillwork. They represent St. Gregory, St. Cecilia (patron saint of Music), and Pope Pius X. Each window is described below.

Pope St. Gregory ("the Great")

540-604

Check here for more information on Roman Catholic church vestments.

A reformer of the Roman liturgy, Pope St. Gregory is sometimes credited with the creation of the Gregorian Chant (plain song or chant). With that in mind, he seems an appropriate choice for one of the windows of the choir loft.

Pope St. Gregory wears a white alb, a white sleeved cassock, a silk brocade cope with blue trim, fastened with a gold morse, and white gauntlets (gloves). On his head is the tiara, a triple crown no longer worn by the popes. He carries a Patriarchal cross.and holds a book, probably a bible, in his hands.

St. Cecilia

Gift of Choir Members, 1941-1942

As virgin martyr and patroness of church music, St. Cecilia is one of the most revered saints. Her feast goes back to the fourth century. She holds a hand organ.

Pope Pius X

1835-1914

Baptized Giuseppe Melchiorre Sartowas, Pius X was pope from 1903-1914 (and canonized in 1954). Pius X was the pope when St. Bernardine was founded in 1911. His feast day is August 21.
