The North Windows
of St. Bernardine Church

The Appearance of the Sacred Heart to St. Margaret Mary Alacoque

In Memory of the Parents of Mr. and Mrs. Joseph Metzger

This window shows that moment in June 1675, when St. Margaret Mary Alacoque (1647-1690) had a "great apparition" where Christ came to her and said, "Behold the Heart that has so loved men . . . instead of gratitude I receive from the greater part (of mankind) only ingratitude . . ." He asked her to help propagate a new devotion which has become known as the Devotion to the Sacred Heart of Jesus.

The Assumption of the Virgin Mary

In Memory of Priscilla J. Russell, 1942

According to tradition, Mary asked that all apostles be present at her death. Here we see them surrounding her while the Holy Spirit is represented by the dove above her head. Mary prays, preparing for the assumption of her soul to Heaven.

Suffer the Little Children to Come Unto Me

Gift of the School Children

The window illustrates the episode where Jesus stresses the importance of children:

"And they brought young children to Him, that He should touch them: and His disciples rebuked those that brought them. But when Jesus saw it, He was much displeased, and said unto them, Suffer the little children to come unto Me, and forbid them not: for of such is the kingdom of God" (Mark 10:13-14).

The Good Shepherd

Gift of a Parishoner, 1942

The first image of the risen savior taken up by the early converts was that of the Good Shepherd.

The Agony in the Garden of Gethsemane

In Memory of John and Aimee Foote

According to Matthew 26:42, while the three disciples--Peter, James and John--sleep in the background, Christ prays, "My Father, if it is not possible that this cup pass without my drinking it, your will be done." According to Luke, "there appeared an angel unto him from Heaven, strengthening him." (Luke 22:43).

The Keys to the Kingdom

In Memory of Peter Troost Family, 1942

The surrounding medallions on this window show symbols of papacy: (top clockwise) the Pope's tiara, two keys, a stole and scourage, a stole with 2 rings woven into 3 rings, an open drape over water surmounted by a cross, a monstrance.

Jesus says to Peter, "And so I say to you, you are Peter, and upon this rock I will build my church, and the gates of the netherworld shall not prevail against it. I will give you the keys to the kindgom of heaven. Whatever you bind on earth shall be bound in heaven; and whatever you loose on earth shall be looseed in heaven." (Matthew 16:18-19)
