pulpit is "the place where the readings are proclaimed, it is the
focus for the liturgy of the Word, the first major part of the Mass."
The four figures representing the four gospels. The figure of a man is
the Gospel of Mark, which gives the most human portrayal of Jesus. The
Lion, portrays the Gospel of Matthew, which portrays Jesus as the son
of David, known as the lion of Judah. The ox is a symbol of the Gospel
of Luke. "The beginning of the Gospel of John soars with the hymn
of Jesus" being the preexistent Word of God. Hence the eagle as the
symbol of the Gospel of John.
