St. Dominic Receives the Rosary from the Virgin Mary and the Christ Child

Gift of the Altar and Rosary Society

St. Dominic, c. 1170-1221, Spanish founder of the Order of Preachers, commonly known as the Dominican Order, is shown receiving the rosary from the Virgin Mary. He instituted the devotion of the rosary.

St. Dominic wears the white robe and black cloak of his Order.

The lily medallion is another attribute to St. Dominic's purity.

The Annunciation

Gift of Reverend John T. Wagner, 1942

Archangel Gabriel brings the news to the Virgin Mary that she will bear the Son of God. St. Luke describes the moment: "And the angel came in unto her, and said, Hail, thou that art highly favored, the Lord is with thee: blessed art thou among women...thou shalt conceive in they womb, and bring forth a son, and shalt call his name Jesus."

The Virgin is dressed in a white gown with a mantle of blue. She is seen at prayers.

The presence of God is represented by the white dove with halo.

The lily is a symbol of purity. The lily of the valley seen in top right medallion symbolizes the Advent of Christ.

The Nativity

Gift of Mrs. Henry F. Nehis in Memory of Her Husband, 1942

The Christ Child raises up from his manger filled with straw in a gesture of blessing, while the Virgin Mary kneels in prayer and St. Joseph looks on. The ox and ass looking on refer to the prophecy of Isaiah 1:3, "the ox knoweth his owner, and the ass his master's crib."

The Holy Family

Gift of William and Estella Curran, 1942

This domestic scene shows the carpenter St. Joseph with his carpentry tools working with the Christ Child. Mary sits sewing a garment.

The wood Jesus holds makes reference to the future cross and the roses make reference to Mary.

The Young Jesus Disputes the Doctors in the Temple

Donated by the Holy Name Society, AD 1941

When Jesus was 12 years old, according to Luke 2, he accompanied his family to Jerusalem for the feast of the Passover. When his parents discovered him missing, they searched and found him in the temple surrounded by several doctors (Jewish rabbis). This scene is usually called the "Dispute in the Temple" or "Christ among the Doctors." The stained glass window is based on a Victorian painting.

The Death of St. Joseph

In Memory of Nicholas and Margaret Shannon

This touching scene shows the death of the aged St. Joseph, blessed by Jesus Christ and comforted by the Virgin Mary.

St. Francis of Assisi

Gift of Michael Cremonesi Family, 1942

One of the best loved saints, St. Francis of Assisi (1182-1226) is shown surrounded by two doves, a bird in hand, squirrel, fawn, wolf, 2 rabbits. Founder of the Franciscan Order, St. Francis practiced humility and poverty. He wears his characteristic brown habit.

One of St. Francis' attributes is the wolf which he addressed as "Brother Wolf" and protected from a town which wanted to kill it.
