The Structure of the Windows
of St. Bernardine Church

Part of the challenge of studying the window is figuring out what the symbolic medallions contain.

All the main side windows follow the same kind of structure. Within a rounded border consisting of both pure decorative elements and 7 symbolic red and blue medallions, an elaborate "frame" with cherubs and a seraphim surround the main picture.

Above is the palette for The Keys to the Kingdom window.

Each gold frame is surmounted by two final urns and two cherubs holding a stylized sacred heart with flames and bearing a symbolic image unique to the window (in this case the three cross of the pope). Above the heart is an eternal flame suggesting Christ as the Light of the World.

Most of the background glass is textured. The most predominate background colors are aqua, blue, and gray. Details are painted on the glass used for the picture, frame, and symbols.

A seraphim is at center and drapery is hung from the corner and the wings.
